Southeast Missouri offers the past brought back to life through its many museums.
The Lutheran Heritage Center and Museum, in Altenburg, tells the story of the original Saxon Lutherans who settled Perry County around 1839 through a number of exhibits. The museum was the first Lutheran church for the Saxon's original settlement and later became a Lutheran school.
If you think that museums filled with dinosaur artifacts are only found in large cities, you should give the impressive Bollinger County Museum of Natural History a look. The museum is located in beautiful Marble Hill and offers a collection of Missouri's dinosaurs, fossils from Missouri and the world, Native American artifacts, and local Civil War history that can rival any other.
The Stars and Stripes Museum located in Bloomfield holds memories of its paper published by the Union Soldiers.
Arriving in Fredericktown, you will find the Advance Transportation and Aviation Museum - a must see for any transportation enthusiast.
The New Madrid Historical Museum located in New Madrid, Missouri, offers visitors information on the great New Madrid earthquake as well as artifacts from its former Native American residents.
A visitor to Ste. Genevieve will need to include a stop at The Bolduc House Museum National Historic Landmark. The authentically restored colonial house offers all the features from early times in Ste. Genevieve. Also plan to visit the Ste. Genevieve Museum which contains artifacts dating to the French and Spanish period.
